Stranger Danger

As Oliver becomes more aware of his surroundings, we've noticed how cautious and judgmental he is around new faces. He will stare and figure the person out before giving any kind of smile or reaction. Yesterday our neighbor Gary came over to visit, who Oliver hasn't seen in awhile. I put Oliver in the exersaucer, and he sat like this, staring at Gary for about 5 minutes.

He would look back at me once in awhile, but kept his gazed locked on this stranger. I reassured him it was OK to smile and play with his toys, and that Gary is a nice friend of ours. In his own time, he finally smiled and went on to play in the saucer. It was hilarious! I wonder as he grows older if he'll continue to be cautious of strangers?

Lovin' the exersaucer

Oliver loves this thing! I swear he's going to bounce right out of it.

This is new.

After pulling on the bumper and wrapping his body around it (again), Oliver fell asleep like this. Arm under the bumper, through the slat. Not sure what to do here. Get rid of the bumper? But then the slats are wide open, just waiting to gobble up little baby arms... Hmm.

P.S. John sleeps just like this! I can't find a picture but I will get one and show you. One arm over his head, the other out the side of the bed.

Cry It Out

Today I did something I thought I'd never do... I let Oliver cry it out. For the past 3 months, he's been waking up at night. Usually just once for a feeding, but sometimes twice. And once in awhile, like the past 2 nights, he's up every 2 hours. I've read practically every book there is on sleep, and they all say something different. Some doctors say 6 month old babies don't need food at night, and should be sleeping 8-12 hours uninterrupted. Others say they are being trained to feel hungry by middle of the night feedings and should be weaned from it. Another doctor says what I'm inclined to believe, that every baby is different and if they're acting hungry, they probably are. It all comes down to what we as parents believe our child needs, and what do we want to do about it? Oliver is such a happy baby, so when he cries I feel like he really needs something. Maybe he's scared, his gums hurt, or didn't have enough snuggles during the day and just wants to be held. Maybe Oliver doesn't NEED to eat in the middle of the night (like I didn't NEED to eat that mini cupcake at 3am. Don't judge me.) but if he's crying and won't stop, maybe he is truly hungry. Whatever it is, all I know is that I have a very hard time laying in bed listening to my baby cry. The Cry It Out method basically tells you to let your child cry so they learn to put themselves to sleep. You have to let them cry so they understand they don't need your help to fall asleep. You're allowed to comfort them every 5-10 minutes but you're not supposed to pick them up, just pat their belly and say you love them. The thing is, Oliver knows how to put himself to sleep, since we always put him in his crib awake at night and after feedings. So the few times we've attempted to let him cry, we'll go in there to rub his belly and he cries even harder. It's like he's begging us to please pick him up. And because he has us wrapped around his miniature finger, we do.

But today, after he refused to nap once again, I realized something needs to change. Even though I'm not convinced crying it out is the best solution, I felt it was time to at least give it a try. I took him on a nice long walk, and he was visibly tired when we got home. I fed him, rocked him and sang a few songs. I told him I loved him, gave the biggest hug I could, and set him in his crib. He rolled around a bit like he usually does, and then started squawking. The squawks got louder... And then turned to cries... And then SCREAMS. I gave it 10 minutes– the LONGEST 10 minutes of my life– and then went in to the room and rubbed his belly. He looked up at me with the biggest, saddest eyes ever (he looks EXACTLY like John when he does that) and reached out for me. Well, I think he was trying to grab my hair since it was swinging in his face as I bent over the crib, but still. He wanted me to pick him up, like I always do. Instead, I gave him his pacifier, and walked out of his room. First, silence– and then, screaming. I could just hear him thinking, "Wait, what the– Where is mommy?? OHMYGOD– She left me!!! WAAAAAAA!!!!!!!" Another 10 minutes of the saddest sounds I've ever heard, and I went in again to reassure him. I rubbed his little belly and he once again reached out for me, and wrapped his tiny legs around my arm, begging me to please stay. I left, and again more crying. 10 more minutes and I went in and he had wrapped his legs around the crib bumper, like he was desperate and needed to hold on to something. Broke my heart. To make it all worse, he looks absolutely adorable in this little onesie that says, "Mommy Loves Me." ::slams head against desk::

So, for ONE WHOLE EFFING HOUR, Oliver cried and I reassured him every 10 minutes (sometimes 5 because I was dying inside and couldn't wait any longer). I kept telling myself that I had to ride this out, and couldn't rock him to sleep right now because I would screw the whole thing up. I had to be consistent, for his sake. I did pick him up twice, but just for a minute (like one book said to do). FINALLY, there was silence. Oliver fell asleep. Well, he cried himself to sleep. What kind of mother does this to her baby?! I know, I know– it's OK, it's normal, it's probably the "right" thing to do. But my God, how can it be right if it seems like I'm torturing my sweet baby? I guess the good thing is that it *DID* work– he fell asleep, and has been sleeping for an hour and a half. He's woken up twice crying softly, and within a minute he was back asleep, all on his own. Right now in this moment, I feel defeated and totally sad. But if this works– and actually gets easier and the crying lessens like everyone says it will– then I'm sure I'll eventually be happy that I gave it a try. But for now, I'll just wait until he wakes up and then cuddle and squeeze him and hope he forgets how much his mom sucks for letting him cry.

Happy Father's Day!

Oliver and I made this slideshow for John in honor of his first Father's Day. We are so lucky to know and love this man!

"Oliver, you're going to be an only child."

John and I have muttered this to each other and our darling son several times since he was born. Oliver is such a sweet, happy baby and more often than not is extremely good natured. But I tell ya... When he's upset, doesn't feel good or just when the stars and moon are out of alignment, WATCH OUT for this child. He wants the world to know his pain and shares the news by SCREAMING at the top of his lungs. It's so sad, and very difficult for John and I to feel so helpless. We do everything we can until something works, and by that time we're exhausted. It's easier to deal with when we've had good sleep, but Oliver hasn't been sleeping that great which makes his crying fits even harder. We've always said we wanted a big family, but it's days like this we can't help but think... What if we just settled with the one?? :)

Nap time, kind of.

Oliver woke up from his nap yesterday and this is what I heard through the monitor.

This is his new way of telling me he's awake! Silly boy.

Sleeping unswaddled!

For the past week, Oliver has been sleeping without his swaddle blanket. Yay! You may remember this post and photo from last month:

Taken May 13, 2010

After this experience, we realized it was time to try and let him loose. Well, we tried and it was HORRIBLE. For every nap that day and bedtime at night, he woke up every couple of hours, freaking out with his arms flailing around, scratching his head and rubbing his eyes until his entire head was red. It was sad, he was exhausted and we were losing patience. After several failed attempts, the next morning I gave in. I swaddled him, put him down in his crib, and he slept peacefully (on his back) for a few hours. I felt like a failure, and was worried that I was creating a really bad habit by continuing to swaddle. But as I started researching online, I read several places that some babies need to be swaddled longer, and they'll let you know when they're ready to go without it. The next couple of weeks he stayed on his back, so at least he wasn't flipping over and getting stuck on his belly!

After his 6-month check up with Dr. B last week, I asked his opinion. He said it was probably best to stop since he doesn't truly need it anymore. The point of swaddling is to comfort new babies who've been wrapped up nice and tight in the womb, and by 6 months he's forgotten all about that. So that day, we put the blanket away and vowed to never use it again. This time, Oliver was ready! His first nap didn't go so well, and he woke up a few more times than usual that night, but since then he's done great. He's figured out how to get comfortable, and really likes to sleep on his belly.

He looks like such a big boy, doesn't he?!

Oliver at 6 Months

At 6 months, Oliver:

-is 18 lbs., 12 oz. and is 28.25" long!
-wears size 3 diapers, and most 6-9 month clothing. He wears 12 month Gerber brand onesies though!
-rolls back to front and front to back all the time! He usually gets his left arm caught under his belly but is getting better at moving it before he rolls.
-screeches and coughs when he wants your attention. And if you don't give him your attention, the noises get louder.
-absolutely loves his exersaucer. He is mesmerized by the toys! He stands up straight and bounces around in it.
-is learning baby sign language.
-has outgrown his bouncy seat. He tried to stand up in it, and it tipped backward, resulting in his head hitting the ground. Tears were shed. Curse words were spoken by Daddy. Bye-bye, bouncy!
-sits in his Bumbo but still falls to the side. We're working on
-has had several rice cereal meals, but seems to hate it. He had one sweet potato meal, but broke out into a rash later that night. I'm not sure if the food caused it, but we'll wait a couple weeks to try it again.
